I visited Beatrix Potter’s house at Hill Top in Cumbria and was taken by the pale green garden gate leading to the vegetable plot. It became the focal point for this painting. I’m sure I spotted a distant relative of Peter Rabbit poking his head up through the vegetables and flowers.
